Third-Party Supplement Testing: Samples, Methods and Report Review
A test result is useful when its method, reporting unit and specification match the decision the buyer needs to make.
Read a report before accepting its conclusion
| Decision | Information to request | How to use the answer |
|---|---|---|
| Sample identity | Material or finished batch, sampling date and chain of records | Resolve whether the tested item is the one being purchased. |
| Method | Named procedure, suitability and relevant laboratory scope | Accreditation does not automatically cover every test. |
| Result | Units, reporting basis and any detection or reporting limit | Do not treat an unreported quantity as measured zero. |
| Decision criterion | Applicable specification and result interpretation | Check that the limit belongs to this product and question. |
| Exceptions | Deviations, atypical results and follow-up responsibility | Agree who investigates and how the batch decision is made. |
Read a test report before using its headline result
Illustrative purchasing exercise, not a customer case, test result or quotation.
A report says that a sample passed. First identify the sample, method and specification against which it was assessed. A passing result for another formula or an unidentified sample cannot release the proposed order.
- Identity check: Sample and batch identifiers, product revision and sampling responsibility.
- Method check: Named analyte or property, method, units and reported result.
- Decision check: Applicable specification and the person authorised to accept the order.
Decision output: If an identifier or method is missing, ask for clarification rather than replacing the gap with a generic “third-party tested” statement. No test result is supplied by this example.
ISO/IEC 17025 addresses testing and calibration laboratory competence. Verify the actual scope relevant to the requested work instead of using the standard number as a general product guarantee. Ingredient identity, finished-product content and shelf-life support may require different samples and methods. Retain the original report with its limitations, not just a marketing statement that the product was third-party tested.
