Supplement Manufacturing Costs: Quotes, Minimums and Reorders
Start from one controlled product brief and show which fields differ between proposals.
Build a first-order and reorder comparison
| Decision | Information to request | How to use the answer |
|---|---|---|
| Definition | Formula, format, serving and finished-pack quantity | Record the version quoted and any proposed substitution. |
| Initial work | Development, trials, tooling and artwork | Identify what is consumed once and what may recur. |
| Routine supply | Ingredients, manufacture, testing and pack | Compare the same finished unit and quality scope. |
| Minimums | Batch, component and printed-material commitments | Identify which constraint sets the practical order. |
| Stock and rights | Surplus materials, formula access and reorder terms | Name who owns each commitment after the order. |
| Delivery | Currency, validity, freight and other exclusions | Keep landed-scope differences explicit. |
Build two comparable quote columns
Illustrative purchasing exercise, not a customer case, test result or quotation.
Consider a proposal for bulk liquid and another for filled, labelled bottles. First align the formula, bottle quantity and included work. A price per kilogram cannot be ranked directly against a price per retail bottle.
- First order: Separate development, samples, tooling or artwork from recurring supply.
- Finished-unit basis: State formula revision, fill or unit count, components and accepted finished-pack quantity.
- Reorder: Identify which initial charges disappear and which material commitments remain.
Decision output: Cost per accepted finished pack equals the included order-scope cost divided by accepted finished packs. Show freight, tax or other exclusions separately; this example supplies no actual price, savings rate or MOQ.
Calculate cost per accepted finished pack only after aligning the scope. A quote per kilogram of ingredient cannot be compared directly with a labelled bottle. For reorders, show which initial charges disappear and which commitments remain. This framework provides no default price, margin, savings percentage or minimum; use the actual written proposals.
