Sports Nutrition Formulation: Turn Performance Goals into a Brief
Separate the proposed ingredient composition from the evidence needed for claims, channel requirements and product-use instructions.
Turn the concept into a development brief
| Decision | Information to request | How to use the answer |
|---|---|---|
| Use situation | Format, preparation, serving presentation and customer experience | Describe the intended product without prescribing an unreviewed dose. |
| Ingredients | Material identities, amounts and restrictions | Identify what is essential and what can change during feasibility work. |
| Experience | Flavour, mixing or dispensing observations | Define how samples will be compared. |
| Channel | Any required product scheme or customer document set | Confirm exact programme scope and listing expectations. |
| Claims | Proposed wording and supporting material | Have the actual formula and conditions of use reviewed. |
Translate a performance idea into measurable development questions
Illustrative purchasing exercise, not a customer case, test result or quotation.
“A sports recovery supplement” does not define a formula. Start by recording the intended consumer experience, format, sales channel and ingredients the brand wants reviewed; a performance claim needs its own evidence review.
- Product task: Describe the format and preparation or use experience.
- Development task: Identify ingredient form, serving constraints, flavour and the sample question.
- Evidence task: Assign who reviews the proposed statements and relevant channel requirements.
Decision output: The first deliverable can be a feasibility brief rather than a formula ready for production. Separate those stages in the quotation and decision log.
Ask the development proposal to identify deliverables, sample decisions and unresolved analytical questions. A sports certification programme should not be treated as evidence of a performance benefit, and an ingredient study should not be treated as finished-product verification. Bring claim and channel requirements into the brief early enough to affect formulation choices.
